realized when reading that Jenkins referred to them, so her modern reader would know what she was talking about, instead of confusing us Also, were Blacks really inducted into the Masons I searched this and, yes, it s true If I had kept reading, in chapter two, this is explained and how it came about I appreciate historical fiction where I learn something new to add to my knowledge of a time period. The writing style was easy to read.Though, near the end, I was questioning in what direction the book was going, because the timeline kept moving forward, in order to touch on major US colonial incidents, without adding to the character s development Before the last 20 or so, almost everything had been resolved her situation in life, their love for each other, and a major conflict in the fight for independence But there was one last item not checked off this is what concluded the book This was an amazing readMidnighttook place during the American Revolution and it was really cool to see the perspectives between African American and or Black Patriots and Loyalists Nick and Faith had an endearing and passionate romance and I just couldn t stop reading This is truly a great historical romance book and I highly recommend it 5 5 stars In Midnight, Beverly Jenkins provides a rarely told and unique glimpse into revolutionary war Boston from the perspective of people of African descent This novel thoughtfully portrays the story and struggle of Black colonists and Loyalists in an oft overlooked aspect to this nation s struggle for independence The fight for freedom Loyalists in an oft overlooked aspect to this nation s struggle for independence The fight for freedom takes on new meaning in this story featuring Faith Kingston and Nicholas Grey as part of the free Black community in New England as events lead to the shot heard round the world The daughter of Inn owner Stuart Kingston, Faith has known only hard work and rules as her iron fisted Loyalist father entertains British General Gage and his men for secret meetings even as she works covertly on behalf of the Patriots When her rebel contact, Primus Grey is betrayed and hung, his son Nicholas returns home determined to find the turncoat The last known contact for Primus was the secretive Lady Midnight a link in the chain of Patriot spies but she proves to be as allusive to Nicholas as Faith. With a backbone of steel and a dignity to match, the fiery Faith is drawn to the sensuous Nicholas who has begun reasserting himself into the community and Faith s life A series of confrontations forces Faith to renounce her father, and be cast out of their home and business she has run Wandering the roads during a storm, she collapses and is found then taken in by Nicholas to start over As Faith forms friendships and begins building a bread baking business, her feelings for Nicholas are matched by his A rebellious man and former smuggler turned fighter, Nicholas uses his contacts to arm the Minutemen and train Black soldiers in preparation for the coming war His determined, spirited attitude eventually softens Faith as her hard work and grace win Nicholas s admiration Midnight is a romance andit s the story of two people among a population of many, whose dignity, resolve and grace add another chapter to the story that is the American Revolution A very good tempo keeps this book humming and the characters are so well drawn, we seethe with anger for Faith at her cruel father s treatment, take up arms for the rights of people of African descent and hold our breath as the tension becomes palpable in the days before Lexington and Concord Incredibly sensual and alluring love scenes are a hallmark of the relationship between Nicholas and Faith as they begin their lives together in a nation about to be born While there is a lengthy amount of narrative toward the end of the book in an effort to bring the story around through 1775 and some of the confessions neatly tidied up, Midnight is a book to be savored and appreciated It s incredibly refreshing to read a story that is not about vampires, dukes, or England, but one that brings people back to another amazing period in history and reminds us that deep down, we all share a desire for freedom, love and acceptance I read this book for the Around the world in 80 books reading challenge for February s African
